ATA LogoAbout Us

ATA started running commercial trips in June 2002. We are based at the main gate to Bujagali Falls, ‘East Africa’s centre for adventure. We have taken thousands of people on our unique quad-bike safaris, along the banks of the River Nile, off the beaten tracks and into the warm heart of unique, unforgettable Uganda.

Peter Knight

Peter (PK) and Shirray Knight, originally from Whakatane, New Zealand and Townsville, Australia respectively, settled at Bujagali Falls after several years leading trans-Africa overland expeditions including 3 trips from England to Zimbabwe via north, west and central Africa. Along the way they got to see a lot of Africa, choosing Bujagali Falls as the ideal place to settle and develop adventure orientated tourism activities.

Trans-Africa with Truck Africa in Congo

Prior to that they lived in London for several years. During that time PK raced FII sidecars, winning the British Motorcycle Racing Club FII Sidecar Championship in '93 and the Newcomers Award at The Isle of Man TT Races in '95.

PK's lifetime interest in motorcycling, combined with Shirray's skills provided the experience to; establish ATA (initially 3 20 foot shipping containers under a bush-pole roof), develop the business in a country that had not seen a quad-bike before, create good SOPs and customer service standards and train staff to provide the professional services required for this adventure tourism business.

There have been some extra challenges in developing the business in the middle of Africa. All the quadbikes had to be imported, spare parts take 2 to 3 months to be delivered. Getting tyres can take weeks of arranging and months to get here.

Low levels of education mean that training has to be much more extensive. For 3 years the only electric power available was from a small generator and even now with mains supply (Ugandan electricity is the second most expensive in the World) there are regular days of load-shedding and outtages where it can take several days for repairs to be effected. There is no water supply available and until a well was dug (33m deep, by hand!) the only supply came from collected rainwater and when that ran out, by jerrycan from the river.

PK and Shirray continue to work together to develop this unique activity in the warm heart of unique, unforgettable Uganda.

Sustainable, Community Based
Adventure Tourism

The ATA Team. Aside from the directors, everyone on the team is Ugandan. ATA have a policy of employing from Budondo sub-county.

Some of the ATA Team have been working together since 2002, initially as builders on construction of the site and then developing the facilities to maintain the quads, develop trails and acquiring the specialised guiding skills needed to make this a successful business.

As the business and tourism in Uganda grow, we have been able to employ more people from the local communities. ATA currently employs 14 people and, providing income for their generally extended families. Improving job conditions include; on-going training programs, assistance with schooling for dependants, sick leave, medical assistance, clothing allowances and interest free staff loans. We also support 2 young men from this village with school fees and pocket money from part-time work. Regular wage increases recognise the contributions that staff make to the business and we try to keep ahead of the national inflation rate that is running at around 15% p.a.

We take pride in providing international standards of service. The bottom line is seeing our clients leave with a smile on their face after a great experience in this beautiful part of Uganda.

Safety is a priority - our safety record is second to none. We take care to conduct safaris in a way that respects the people living in the communities you will pass through. We tailor each trip according to the conditions and riders' abilities. All our guides have First Aid training and carry first-aid kits.

When you come on safari with us, you can be pleased to know that the money generated goes back into the area and helps development, providing many people with an improved standard of living.
